Erasmus Group Mobility – A Week of Cultural Exchange and Friendship with BIGY Gymnasium, Brno

From May 18th to May 23rd, we had the pleasure of welcoming a group of students and teachers from our ERASMUS+ partner school, BIGY Gymnasium from Brno, Czech Republic. This enriching week was a celebration of intercultural learning, environmental awareness, and student collaboration, all set against the beautiful backdrop of Salzburg.

A selected group of our students took the lead in organizing a diverse programme to help our guests to discover the spirit of our school and city. The week began with interactive games and a school tour, helping everyone to settle in and to get to know each other. As the days unfolded, our guests experienced the cultural and natural richness of Salzburg—from a scavenger hunt through the historic old town to visits to iconic sites such as Zoo Hellbrunn, Schloss Hellbrunn with its famous trick fountains, and the Festung Hohensalzburg. Students showed their creative side by offering a “Kreativwerkstatt” for our guests and organized an Escape the Room.

Our Czech guests were also introduced to the region’s commitment to sustainability and environmental education. They enjoyed a Fair Trade breakfast with the mayor at Schloss Mirabell, took part in an engaging workshop with a local botanist about invasive species, and even participated in flower planting during a picnic at Hellbrunner park, which was held through the App TooGoodToGo to fight food waste. The group also visited the hydroelectric power plant “Sohlstufe Lehen” and saw the insights through a technical perspective.

Of course, no visit to Salzburg would be complete without a touch of music and tradition. A guided tour of the Festival Hall and an evening at the traditional puppet theatre featuring The Sound of Music brought a magical close to the week. Before their departure, the group also visited Haus der Natur, a beloved science and nature museum that showcases the best of Austrian curiosity and innovation.

Throughout the week, deep friendships were formed, languages were practiced, and laughter was shared. We are incredibly proud of our students for their enthusiasm, hospitality, and leadership in making this Erasmus exchange such a success. A heartfelt thank you goes to our wonderful guests from Brno—we already look forward to seeing you again!
